We sadly mark the passing of one of Africa's fantastic dressers: Omar Bongo. After emerging from the Blaxsploitation film industry in the 70s, Omy (as he was known to his inner circle) dazzled in conservative solid color western suits so as not to overshadow his facial hair. Eschewing the traditional gilded garb of his contemporaries, Omy set the standard not only for years in office sans election but sans opulance opting for the more understated look of European designer threads and back-alley beatings. We shall miss ye.

Despot Memorium: Bongo the Outstanding

ReplyDeletePlease note: Bongo may not have been the first, but he was definitely the best at integrating self-image into election daywear. Eschewing his general single-color dapper minimalism, he is seen here celebrating his re-re-election in a suitably postmodern self-referential style parade, accompanied by his lady.
